There are two major types of doctoral degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and professional degrees.

  • Ph.D.: Ph.D. programs are research-based, with curriculum traditionally divided between coursework in the field of study, followed by comprehensive examinations (oral and written), and culminating with an original research project in the form of a written dissertation. Ph.D. programs are available in a variety of academic concentrations, ranging from history to neuroscience, education to chemistry
  • Professional Doctorate: Professional doctoral degrees are research-oriented, but focus on research in regards to a professional area of study. For example, common professional doctorates include the Doctor of Social Work (DSW), Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), and Doctor of Public Administration (DPA).

Here are just a few reasons why it may be worth your while to consider earning a doctorate:

Higher wages: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), individuals with professional degree or a doctorate had average weekly earnings of $1,745 and $1,664 respectively in 2017. With the the average weekly earnings of those who hold a bachelor’s degree at $1,156, those who hold a Ph.D can earn $26,000 to $30,000 more annually than those who have a bachelor’s degree.

Lower unemployment rates: Those who hold a Ph.D. are more likely to be employed and stay employed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is at 1.5 percent for those with a Ph.D.; 2.5 percent for those who have a bachelor’s degree; and 4 percent for individuals with some college education.

High-level careers: While doctoral degrees were traditionally thought of as a pathway into academia, BLS data shows that 91 percent of the labor force with a professional degree, and 94 percent with a doctoral degree worked in the management, professional, and related occupations. A doctorate can help you enter the highest ranks of your field.

Credibility: Holding a doctorate can demonstrate your commitment to your field of study. Subject matter experts are required to hold doctoral degrees and usually find themselves in policy-making or influencing progression in their field of study.

Completing an online doctoral degree requires a vast amount of commitment in terms of time and money so it is always good to consider the steps involved toward your journey to earning a doctorate.

Accreditation: It’s important to look for an accredited university not only because such universities meet educational standards set by the accrediting body but there is another advantage for students. One of the qualifying criteria for most federal and state financial aid and scholarships is being enrolled in an accredited university.

Eligibility: Most online doctoral degree programs require you to hold a master’s degree in the field you want to complete your doctorate in. Apart from official college transcripts, you may also need to provide a resume showing your educational and work history. Some universities may also require recommendation letters from your previous professors or employers.

Time taken to complete a doctoral degree: The time you need to complete your online doctoral degree can vary depending on the field you are specializing in and your topic of research. Doctoral degrees can take between three to seven years to finish.

Financial aid and scholarships: Depending on the type of doctoral degree program you are enrolled in, financial aid may be available in the form of research grants, stipends and scholarships. The NSF reports that research assistantships are the most popular source of financial support for doctoral students along with fellowships, grants and teaching assistantships, provided they qualify.

Learning Format: Online doctoral degree programs can either be fully online or hybrid programs. Hybrid programs are a combination of on-campus and online classes. You may be required to visit campus for short residencies, seminars or laboratory work but a majority of your work is completed online.

Most online colleges deliver asynchronous programs which may be more convenient for working adults as well as across time zones. Asynchronous programs allow you to access your coursework any time allowing you the flexibility you need to balance work, life and study.

We’ve used data from the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to rank the most popular online doctoral degrees based on the number of degrees conferred, median salary and projected employment. Take a look at our methodology at the bottom of the page.
