Bachelors In Business Administration

Where there is a business, there is a need for people with administrative business skills. Whether it’s in handling the daily operations of a business, planning, organizing, staffing or marketing, administrative skills can be required in just about any business.

The versatile skills you can develop in online degrees in business administration such as communication, decision-making skills, people management, and more can qualify you for a number of job opportunities in the business world. However, these skills often transfer well to jobs in non-business fields, as well.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) predicts that automation is likely to create 56 percent more jobs than the number of jobs lost through automation. According to WEF, there continues to be a “high and growing demand” for jobs where human skills are required. These jobs typically include the likes of customer service representatives, sales representatives, marketing specialists, and in areas of training, culture, organization and innovation.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reports that business administration is among the top three majors in demand by employers at the bachelor’s degree level.

Online bachelor’s degrees in business administration are typically of two types:

  • Bachelor in Science (B.S. or BSBA) : these degrees can have a stronger focus on mathematical and business-related disciplines when compared to bachelor of arts degrees
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A. or BBA) : about one-fourth of the coursework for these degrees is in liberal arts allowing students to gain a broad spectrum of knowledge in different disciplines

While there is plenty of scope for jobs you can qualify for after earning your bachelor’s in business administration, as listed above, we’ve described the journey to become a top executive, an occupation that many would aspire for.

Becoming a senior executive may be a career goal for many after earning your degree. However, according to an article published by the HULT International Business School, there are plenty of ways to get to the top by gaining work experience in different companies and job roles. Top executives need the know-how to guide their businesses so that they remain profitable by devising and implementing strategies and policies that help their organizations reach their goals.

Step 1: Needed prerequisites:

The BLS states that individuals need at least a bachelor’s degree coupled with extensive managerial experience. According to the HULT International Business School, having a strong financial background can be an asset with almost half of the Fortune 100 CEOs having served as divisional Chief Financial Officers (CFOs). Strong leadership and communication skills are also important for aspiring top executives to hone.

Step 2: Education / work experience required:

Many Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) work their way up internally within the company substituting the lack of educational qualifications with years of work experience. However, the BLS states that many top executives of large companies hold an accredited Master of Business Administration degree (MBA). Top executives working within the educational field, like college presidents for example, may be required to hold doctoral degrees.

Certifications

Professional certifications for top executives are rare as most of them have proven their expertise by reaching their posts. However, the CEO Institute offers the Certified CEO certification that recognizes CEOs worldwide for their contribution to leadership. They also offer other certifications for senior management. The Institute of Certified Professional Managers also offers the Certified Manager Certification that can help you demonstrate your competency as a manager.

Licensure

Individuals working as senior management usually do not need to hold licenses unless they work in highly regulated industries like finance or healthcare. These requirements may vary from state to state.

Managers at various levels are in demand across a wide range of industries. One such example is general and operations manager. Accounting for 17 percent of the job growth in the country, and the world’s fifth largest economy, California has the highest levels of employment for this occupation. California also tops the list for the highest employment for CEOs, the other top two states being Texas and New York. Look through the table below to find detailed information about the various metropolitan areas and salary figures we have gathered from the BLS for general and operations manager

There are a number of ways to climb the career ladder after earning your bachelor of business administration online. Your specialization may play a role in this. For example, if you have majored in accounting – you may enter the workforce with an entry-level role accountant or a financial analyst and move up the ranks to become a CFO.

Another option is to complete an MBA which may make you eligible for management roles right from the start. Some job options can include operations manager and marketing manager. Doctoral degrees may allow you to enter the field of academia, set up your own consultancy firm or work in upper management roles.
