Bachelors in Aviation

PricewaterhouseCoopers reports that the aviation industry is in flux — consumers are demanding personalized travel experiences, the demand for air freight services is expected to grow, and big data is making its importance felt. With global profits exceeding 34 billion dollars, the opportunities to grow in this industry are diverse and potentially enormous. An online bachelor’s in aeronautics and aviation degree program can allow you to major in this field and gain a well-rounded understanding of how the aviation industry works.

You may be able to choose from several types of aviation degrees depending on your interests and career goals. For example, if you are interested in how airports are run, then perhaps an online aviation management degree is the one for you or if you want to fly, then maybe an online aviation transport degree can help you get your dream job.

An aviation bachelor’s degree online may suit recent high school graduates, working professionals or career changers who want the same quality of instruction provided by a traditional brick-and-mortar institution but need the flexibility of an online program due to work, family or other commitments

Many online aviation degree programs either require students to hold certifications or licenses from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or obtain them from an FAA approved center during the course of their studies. For example, if you do not have a pilot’s license, you may be able to complete your necessary flight hours at a center close to you.

Source: Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) 2018-19, National Center for Education Statistics, http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/

The BLS lists airline pilots, co-pilots, and flight engineers among the top 20 occupations in 2019 with the highest median annual pay. Apart from these, there are plenty of other jobs that you can have with an aviation degree.

The section below describes some of the occupations related to this field along with along with job openings, average salary, total employment and job outlook for 2019 to 2029 using data from the BLS.

Fastest-Growing Occupations
Annual Median Wage
Job Growth
Commercial Pilots$86,0808%
Aircraft Mechanics and Service Technicians$64,0903%
Avionics Technicians$65,7002%
Air Traffic Controllers$122,9901%
Source: 2019 Occupational Employment Statistics and 2018-28 Employment Projections, Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS.gov.

The BLS predicts that the job growth for commercial and airline pilots is slightly faster than the average for all occupations at 6 percent. Apart from ferrying passenger to-and-fro in aircrafts, pilots may also fly helicopters and other aircraft. They may transport cargo, fly chartered aircraft, help with agricultural activities like crop dusting or work in search and rescue operations.

Step 1: Needed prerequisites:

The College Board states that pilots need to be detail-oriented and decisive people. Being able to remain composed under pressure is another important trait to have as pilots may need to make quick, well-judged decisions in case of danger, according to the BLS.

Step 2: Education / work experience required:

Pilots usually need a bachelor’s degree in any field. However, an online aviation degree can help aspiring pilots understand the business behind aviation as well as theoretical knowledge they need to succeed in the field. Additionally, pilots may need to gain around 1,500 hours of flight experience.

What Licensures and Certifications Do I Need To Be An Airline Pilot?

After gaining the flying hours needed as well as a bachelor’s degree, commercial pilots usually need to obtain the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification by passing written and practical flight exams. The BLS reports that airline pilots usually maintain ratings for more than one type of airplane that allows them to fly aircrafts that require specific training depending on the airline they work with.

Typical certification and ratings path (as taken from the BLS):

  • Student pilot certificate
  • Private pilot license
  • Instrument rating
  • Commercial pilot license
  • Multi-engine rating
  • Airline transport pilot certificate

Each certification and rating requires students to pass a written test along with a practical flight check. Additionally, they typically need to pass a medical examination that verifies that they are fit to fly.

Pilots may also need to pass physical and practical flight examinations periodically in order to retain their ratings and certifications.

Apart from earning a degree, aviation students also need to gain hands-on experience in order to qualify for many jobs in the industry. Naturally, the question of how to fund their education arises. Fortunately, there are quite a few scholarships out there for eligible students that can help ease this burden. We’ve listed a few below to help you get started in your search.

Advancement can come with experience and/or more advanced aviation degrees. Pilots may progress from commercial pilots to airline pilots. The BLS reports that advancement for airline pilots is usually based on seniority which is elaborated in their collective bargaining contracts. Airline pilots may start off as flight engineers, be promoted to first officers after one to five years of flight and then finally to captain after five to 15 years.
