Online Degrees in New York

The New York State Distance Learning Consortium says “distance learning helps bridge the gap in educational opportunities.” Having an option like distance learning when it comes to achieving a college education could make a big difference for some, as they may not be able to attend postsecondary institutions in a traditional fashion.

For example, the rigid class schedules of many traditional programs can be unaccommodating to working adults who want to earn their college degree. Online degree programs, on the other hand, often give students a greater degree of flexibility in how and when they take courses. Allowing students to schedule classes around their busy schedules could help make it easier for many college hopefuls to complete a degree. This is important since the Lumina Foundation, a private entity committed to increasing the number of college graduates, reports that 63 percent of jobs in New York will require some form of college credential by the year 2018.

Residents of remote areas where college campuses are not readily accessible may also benefit from online degree programs. Supplying them with distance learning opportunities could help the state build the well educated workforce necessary to staff the growing jobs in New York.
