Berklee College Of Music To Launch Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs

In an effort to give more students access to an affordable, quality music education, the Berklee College of Music is introducing two online degree programs, which are currently accepting applications for the inaugural Fall 2014 semester. Online education is nothing new to Berklee, which has been offering classes online for over ten years, long before it became standard for colleges to grant online degrees. In addition, earlier this year, Berklee launched the country’s first online MBA program in Music Business, and has been offering non-credit courses taught by the school’s faculty through Coursera and edX at no cost.

“This is all about expanding access,” Debbie Cavalier, the school’s Vice President of Online Learning and Continuing Education told The Boston Globe. “This is a way to provide access to people across the world who want to learn from Berklee faculty, but aren’t able to study here on our campus in Boston.”

In order to help expand that access to students, the tuition for Berklee’s new degree programs will be $16,500 per year, dramatically less than the tuition for the school’s traditional degree programs. Full-time students enrolled on-campus at Berklee can expect to pay $36,514 annually for tuition, as well as about $17,000 for housing and fees.

New degree programs prepare students for realities of music industry

Berklee College of Music will be offering the new online bachelor’s degrees through its continuing education division, Berklee Online. The Music Production degree program is designed to teach students how to create and produce music, and will cover topics such as how to record, engineer, and mix music, as well as the software programs commonly used in the industry. Students will be provided with the theoretical foundation of music production and gain hands-on experience through exercises such as creating a music portfolio.

Berklee’s Music Business degree program will help prepare students for the fast-changing industry by teaching them about the challenges music professionals currently face. Classes in this program will cover topics such as music licensing, marketing, and management, as well as funding and revenue sources for music projects.

In a recent statement, the school’s president, Roger Brown explained how the curriculum of these programs will benefit students and help them achieve long-lasting success in the industry. “Berklee has learned a lesson from our front row seat observing the music industry, namely, lead the change or be a victim of it. With an online degree, we can expand access to the powerful tools of contemporary music making to many more students.”

Students in either degree program will be required to complete 120 credit hours in order to graduate. Instructors in the programs will include Berklee College of Music’s regular faculty members, as well as experts in the music business.
