Online Degrees in Web Development
According to the Internet monitoring company Pingdom, 21.4 million new sites were added to the World Wide Web in 2010, bringing the total to 255 million. No wonder O*NET OnLine, a resource sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), says that Web development careers have a "bright outlook."
As with most functions, job descriptions for Web developers are likely to vary from employer to employer. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) suggests the following core activities:
- Taking responsibility for the technical side of creating a website
- Building Web applications using packaged software and tools
- Identifying and organizing the information a site will need
- Integrating back-office systems such as databases
In some organizations, Web development may also include the design and layout of Web pages, so some appreciation of the principles of graphic design (and Web design applications) could be useful in those environments.
