Federal Government to Create Official Dental Hygienist Credential

The Health Resources and Services Administration is exploring the possibility of creating a national standard for advanced dental hygiene practitioners. This would provide serious endorsement and support for professionals in this vital field of health care.

In any industry, the development of national standards increases the effectiveness of professional positions. Standards improve the quality of work and the level of pay for employees. The dental hygienist field is poised to accept a national designation dubbed Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner.

Dental Hygienists Recognized

  • Congressional Support. Dental hygienists will not receive this more comprehensive credentialing without the support of both houses of Congress.
  • Getting Involved. Dental hygienists from across the country lobbied Congress in March to give support to the proposed legislation, which will strengthen the industry.
  • The Results. The results of congressional recognition will be a noticeable improvement in standards of dental care.
If you have considered a career in the medical field but didn't want to sacrifice the time and money for a doctoral degree, a dental hygiene program might be your best bet. Dental hygienists perform a variety of duties that are critical in maintaining the oral and holistic health of patients.

The Dental Hygiene Program Up Close

  • Prep Classes. Before you enter your dental hygiene program, classes such as biology, chemistry, and human anatomy will help you prepare.
  • Entry Degree. Dental hygienists must be licensed in the state in which they practice. This includes a combination of classroom training and on-the-job experience.
  • Career Outlook. Employment of dental hygienists is expected to grow much faster than average in the next decade.
There has never been a better time to become a dental hygienist. The profession is undergoing some major changes that will expand opportunities for everyone involved.
