Online Education: One Class or a College Degree

Perhaps you need to take a class to improve your computer skills, or your boss recommends an accounting course as part of your performance review. Or maybe you want to start (or finish) your college degree. Try an online class. You can find courses from accounting to zoology offered by legitimate, accredited academic institutions.

Online Education Offers Many Options

If you are interested in studying online, you can choose from a wide array of courses meant for personal enrichment, career enhancement, or credit courses that can be applied toward a college degree. The popularity of online education has led many people to earn a college degree by studying online. If you're ready to take your first online class, here are some things to keep in mind while searching for an online class.

  • Make a Plan: Why are you taking the class? If it's for personal enrichment, you may find that courses not taken for credit cost less. Non-credit courses can be a great way to try online education before committing to courses taken for credit.
  • Research Schools: If you are interested in a college degree program, it's a good idea to contact several online schools. Find out if they accept credits earned from other schools, how many credits are required for a degree, and if there are any residency requirements. Some online degree programs require short visits to campus.
  • Assess Costs: Get an estimate of all costs associated with your course or program. Tuition is only the start. You can expect to buy books, and supporting materials, and may be asked to pay additional fees.

Once you've done your homework, it's time to get started on your first online class. Set aside specific times to study in a quiet place without interruption, if possible. Communicate with your instructor regularly, and participate in class activities assigned by your instructor. Finally, don't wait until the last minute to do your coursework. Enjoy your online class, which can be the first step to a college degree.
