Software Engineer

Job Summary:
Software engineers research, design, and develop computer software systems. They work with hardware engineers and customers to determine the customers' computing needs, the available computer hardware, and time and cost limitations in order to design or select the best software. They determine the appropriate software design by using scientific analysis and mathematical models. They then create the software, following the principles and methods of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis. Software engineers develop and direct software testing, programming, and the documentation of the completed system. They may work with their customers to train users and maintain software systems.

Qualification:
Software engineers usually have a degree in computer science or a degree in software engineering. Many computer engineers have a degree in math or physics. Computer engineers continually update their education by attending seminars and taking additional college courses.

Salary Range:
Wages are slightly higher for computer software engineers. The median wage for these workers is $5,850 per month ($33.76 per hour). Half of all computer software engineers earn between $4,600 and $7,430 per month ($26.54 and $42.34 per hour)

Wages vary by employer and specialty. The engineer's level of experience, training, and responsibility also affect wages.

Prospects:
Beginning computer engineers usually test computer systems. As they gain experience, they may advance to designing hardware and software. Those who have good people and organizational skills may become project managers. Project managers supervise computer engineers and technicians.
