Medical Transcriptionist
Job Summary: The job of medical transcriptionists is to transcribe dictated recordings into reports, correspondence etc. Physicians generally record the medical history of the patient, examination and consultation reports, autopsy reports, referrals etc. These recordings are then transcribed by medical transcriptionists using a headset and foot pedal for listening and key in the data on a computer. The transcribed material is then sent to the physician for corrections, signatures etc. The transcribed material is then filed with the patient?s records for future use. Medical transcriptionists should be well versed with medical terminology, jargon, abbreviations, pharmacology etc. They should conform to set standards and comply with legal and ethical requirements. They should be able to spot mistakes and take corrective measures. Their effectiveness means better treatment for patients. Nowadays most medical transcriptionists work from home. Those who work in clinics or offices may have additional duties like answering phones, handling mail etc. Qualification: Post secondary training program in medical transcription is the minimum requirement. A 2-year degree course or a certification from AAMT adds value. Salary Range: Ranges from $10 to $20 per hour. Prospects: Job prospects are very good. With an aging population, the demand for transcriptionists is on the rise. However outsourcing the work to cost effective locations could prove to be a dampener. |
