Job Summary: Medical records technicians are hired to maintain records of patients who visit hospitals or clinics. The job of a medical record technician is to record the observations of the physician, symptoms, treatment, and outcome. The medical records technician in short keeps a record of the patient?s medical history. They have to make sure all forms are in order and duly signed. If they are in any doubt they consult physicians to clarify. They are also required to assign codes for procedures. They should be able to work on computers and designate the patient to a particular DRG (diagnosis-related group). Technicians also need to analyze available information of patients. Qualification: Medical records technicians need to pass the Registered Health Information Technicians examination. A 2-year associate degree program is required to write this examination. Salary Range: Ranges from $20,000 to $50,000. Prospects: Job prospects for medical records technicians are very good.
