Mechanical Drafting Careers
Job Summary:
Prepare the complete machinery diagram with all the assemblies and sub-assemblies, even nuts and bolts. Prepare the bill of materials. Prepare specifications. Mechanical drafting is an ocean. Specialized knowledge and skill required for most sophisticated jobs. The mechanical appliances, equipments and machinery vary from industry to industry. Equipment fabrication drawings, equipment orientation schemes are to be spelt out clearly. In the case of tools and machine tools, the drawings prepared should be clear and precise, the material to be used, the operations to be carried out such as cutting, milling, drilling, boring etc are to be given in clear terms. For sub-contracted parts or bought over parts, vendor diagrams in great details are to be prepared.Not long ago, draftsmen used to rely on drawing boards, T-squares, pencils, pens, triangles, protractors, compasses, calculators etc. Nowadays they are trained to use Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD). In the CADD system you can design any complicated part. You don’t use an eraser to erase anything, which is not correct as was done previously. You can do it by deleting the wrong portion by using the mouse and can see this happening in the monitor. You can store all the completed as well as jobs under progress in the computer and can recall any of these at will for further working. Revisions become possible with relative ease. Duplications become easy. Generally, a blue print should indicate the size, format, exact location, bill of material, drawing number, scale, drawn by whom, checked by whom and an indication of direction. Qualification:
Minimum post-secondary school. Draftsman training of 2 years duration. Draftsman diploma of 4 years after passing secondary school is quite good. There are early, middle and advance levels. Specialization is a must. Qualification:

Ranges from $24,000 per annum to $60,000 per annum. Prospects:
Mechanical draftsmen are in great demand. Whether it is electrical, electronic and, or, plain mechanical discipline. It may be a sophisticated seagoing vessel, or a locomotive, or a fast car, or airplanes, or missiles; in all these it boils down to a sturdy mechanical base function. The draftsman who prepares mechanical blue prints is having a good scope. Whether it is capital goods or simple white goods, the scope is interlinked with the growth in the economy. In boom it peaks, in recession it slips down. Nothing can be done about it. |
