Fine Arts

Job Summary:
Fine artists create works of art to communicate ideas, thoughts, or feelings.Fine artists use many methods, such as painting, sculpting, or illustration, to express their ideas. They also use many different means, such oils, plaster, clay, and computers. Most fine artists are self-motivated. They view their art as a means of self-expression. Other artists use their skills to create commercial art. They are paid to create specific designs.

The works of fine artists are displayed in museums, galleries, and private homes. Some artwork is commissioned (done by request). For these pieces, artists meet with clients to discuss objectives, ideas, and themes to be portrayed. Most artwork, however, is created by artists and bought by people who like the item. Because there is no guarantee that artwork will sell, many fine artists hold other jobs. Some teach art in high schools and colleges. Others work as administrators of arts programs. Fine artists also work as art critics and consultants to foundations that invest in art.

Qualification:
A fine artist must have many years of artistic training and practice, be creative andhave talent. No formal training is needed to become an artist. However, many artists earn a bachelor's (BFA) or master's (MFA) degree in fine arts.

Salary Range:
Nationally, the median wage for fine artists is $2,740 per month ($15.80 per hour). Half of all fine artists earn between $1,860 and $3,740 per month ($10.71 and $21.59 per hour).

Salary ranges vary by employer and the artist's reputation. Many fine artists are self-employed and sell their work by the piece. Others work for a commission, which is a percentage of the amount a painting is sold for.

Prospects:
Fine artists advance as their work becomes more widely circulated. If an artist can establish a reputation for a particular style, it may become easier to receive commissions for future work. It will also become easier to find art galleries willing to show their work.

With a college education, artists can become administrators for arts organizations or art galleries. They can also teach in high schools, colleges, and universities.
