Data Entry

Job Summary:
Data entry keyers use computers to enter numbers and information into a database. They do most of their work on computers and use keyboards to enter the information. New types of data entry that do not use keyboards are appearing such as scanners to enter information. The scanner reads the information into a computer file that the operator can revise. Thus, data entry keyers only have to enter information the scanners cannot read. In some offices, keyers also operate printers and tape readers, as well as perform some administrative duties.

Qualification:
While not required, training beyond high school can be useful because to work as a data entry keyer, you must complete a high school diploma or GED, have very good keyboarding skills, and have computer skills. Technical schools, community colleges, and business schools offer courses related to data processing.

Salary Range:
Nationally, the median wage for data entry keyers is $1,830 per month ($10.56 per hour). Half of all data entry keyers earn between $1,540 and $2,200 per month ($8.88 and $12.71 per hour).

Data entry keyers who work in manufacturing and utility companies earn more than those who work in banking and other service industries. Salaries tend to be higher on the west coast.

Prospects:
Data entry positions are considered entry-level jobs. With experience and training, data entry keyers can advance to higher-level positions. It is not unusual for skilled data entry keyers to be promoted to supervisory positions in data processing departments.
