Job Summary: Lawyers are also known as attorneys. Their job is to argue for their clients in criminal and civil trials. They also advise and provide legal counsel to clients. They assist clients in business and personal matters by suggesting the best course of action, their legal rights etc. Lawyers specialize in particular fields like, insurance, intellectual property rights, bankruptcy, international law, environment law, criminal law, etc. There are other types of lawyers like trial lawyers who have to represent clients frequently in court. Though trial lawyers visit courtrooms often, they also research, interview witnesses and generally prepare for a trial. Though most lawyers are in private practice, some lawyers work for the state. They are known as public prosecutors, public defenders etc. Some lawyers are employed by big corporations as house counsels and their job is to advise the corporation on legal issues. The issues concerned could be government regulations, mergers with other companies, property litigation, patents etc. Nowadays lawyers are using technology to help them in their research. Lawyers have to read a lot of material to prepare cases. Lawyers should be quick thinkers. They should be able to think logically and be able to put their point across in a proper way. Qualification: The minimum education required to become a lawyer is a bachelor's degree followed by 3 years in law school. The person also needs to successfully complete a written bar examination. Salary Range: Averages $50,000 to $200,000. Prospects: Prospects for lawyers seem to be very good due to the growth of the population. Demand will be spurred by demand for lawyers to provide legal counsel in areas such as environment, intellectual property etc. |
